Nightguard, Sportsguard
& Snoring Appliances

Nightguards

If you clench or grind your teeth at night while you are sleeping, you may need an appliance called nightguards. This type of appliance custom fits over your teeth to protect them from wear caused by clenching and grinding. There are two common types of guards available and your dentist can help you determine which nightguards will work best for you.

Sportguards

A sports mouthguard is a removable dental appliance that fits over the upper teeth and gums to prevent and reduce injuries such as tooth loss or fracture and lacerations to the mouth and gums.

If you experience a direct blow to the jaw or teeth, a sports mouthguard acts as a shock absorber so that the force is distributed and absorbed throughout the appliance.

Snoring Appliances

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a serious medical condition characterized by collapse of the airway while sleeping causing a stoppage of normal air flow into the lungs and is often (but not always) accompanied by loud snoring. As the body is no longer able to breathe normally patients will experience episodes of wakefulness as they struggle to breathe throughout the night, the loud snoring can also be irritating to their bed partner who may also be awakened by the snoring or loud gasping for air. This chronic condition can have a number of serious health consequences and if you are concerned about sleep apnea or snoring please discuss the matter with your physician or mention it to your dentist or hygienist at your next checkup.

OSA is normally treated with a device designed to keep the airway open while sleeping called a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine.  However, many patients cannot tolerate this device or prefer something more discrete/portable.

If you suffer from sleep apnea and cannot tolerate your CPAP device you may be a good candidate for a sleep apnea appliance. These appliances, while not suitable for every case of OSA, can help you to maintain an open airway while you sleep improving the quality of your sleep and also reducing the volume and frequency of snoring episodes.

Please contact our office if you wish to schedule a consultation to determine if a sleep apnea appliance is right for you.
