Preventive Dental Hygiene
Checking In on Your Oral Health
If your teeth aren't yellow or causing you pain and discomfort, you may assume you can skip a dental checkup or two without consequence. However, plaque builds up and may lead to tartar, tooth decay, and potentially gum disease. By the time disease and decay progress to advanced stages, they can do significant damage to your oral and overall health.
Even if you brush and floss diligently, we still recommend seeing your dentist twice a year for checkups and cleanings. During these regular appointments, we will closely examine your teeth, gums, jaw and bite for any issues and recommend treatment or follow-up care if needed.
Your dentist can also take dental X-rays and screen for oral cancer when required.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer can infect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues. An oral cancer screening can help us catch early signs of oral cancer and start treatment as soon as possible. At Circle Drive & 8th Street Dental, we use a VELscope oral cancer screening device to help us detect any abnormalities.
Treating Dry Mouth
Has your mouth been feeling dry lately? Let your dentist know, as this can cause problems with your teeth, gums, or overall oral health. We can treat this condition by providing a topical fluoride treatment during your appointment, prescribing a daily fluoride rinse, or recommending antibacterial mouthwash.
Dental Hygiene Cleaning
During your appointment, one of our dental hygienists will perform a deep cleaning of your teeth to prevent dental disease.
First, they will use a scaler to remove plaque and tartar buildup. A polisher and coarse toothpaste will then be used to remove any remaining stains or plaque. Finally, the hygienist will floss your teeth thoroughly.
Fluoride Treatment
Your dentist will assess whether you or your child are at risk for tooth decay and may recommend a fluoride treatment. The fluoride comes in the form of a topical gel, varnish, or foam the dentist or dental hygienist applies to your teeth.
These treatments can also help extend the life of baby teeth, prevent cavities and slow the growth of harmful bacteria that cause plaque.
