Refresh Your Smile
If you enjoy sipping the occasional soda, savouring your morning coffee or have been unable to quit smoking, you likely have some stubborn surface stains on your teeth.
Professional teeth whitening can help remove these stains. We offer two options: come into our office to have your dentist perform a whitening treatment in one go, or use custom take-home whitening trays. The trays allow you to whiten your teeth whenever you need a touch-up without having to schedule an appointment with your dentist.
Anyone with healthy teeth and gums may be a candidate for teeth whitening. Your dentist can help determine if this cosmetic service is right for you.
What are the Benefits of Teeth Whitening?
It's natural to smile when we meet someone new. Revealing a bright, white smile can increase your confidence in both social and professional settings.
Additionally, whitening your teeth might indirectly help you improve your oral hygiene by motivating you to commit to a consistent oral care routine in order to maintain your results.
How Teeth Whitening Works
During your consultation, your dentist will help you choose the appropriate shade of white for your unique smile.
To whiten your teeth, your dentist will use bleaching agents that penetrate your tooth enamel and dissolve stains. The peroxide-based gel reacts with discoloured molecules on the surface of the tooth, leaving you with a brighter smile.
Teeth Whitening FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions about what to expect from teeth whitening at Circle Drive & 8th Street Dental.
-
How long do the effects of teeth whitening last?
You should know that whitening is not permanent. Certain foods, such as those that contain tumeric, can stain the teeth. Beverages such as coffee and wine can also contribute to discoloration. The effects of whitening may last longer for some people than others depending on diet.
Provided you maintain a thorough oral hygiene routine, you may just desire a touch-up after a year or so. Ask your dentist for advice on how to extend the effects of your teeth whitening treatment for as long as possible.
-
Does insurance cover the cost of teeth whitening?
Since teeth whitening is an entirely cosmetic procedure, most insurance policies will not pay for whitening treatments.
-
Does teeth whitening make teeth more sensitive?
You may notice some sensitivity for a short time after you've whitened your teeth. For most patients, this gradually disappears within a few days following a whitening session. To minimize any discomfort, we recommend using an anti-sensitivity toothpaste before your treatment, and for at least two weeks after your treatment.
-
Do teeth whitening products work on all stains?
Yellow or brown-coloured stains typically respond best to teeth whitening treatments. Other stains tend not to respond to teeth whitening treatments at all.
If you would like a whiter smile but you have non-responsive stains on your teeth, your dentist may recommend other restorative dental services such as dental crowns, which may be a better fit for you.
-
Does teeth whitening work on dental restorations?
Unfortunately not. Teeth whitening is only effective on natural teeth and will not work on existing dental restorations such as dental crowns. If dental restorations are part of your treatment plan, you should plan to have teeth whitening treatments before your dentist places your dental restorations.
-
Will teeth whitening damage my tooth enamel?
It's unlikely that teeth whitening will damage your dental enamel when used under the supervision of your dentist. Always consult a dentist before whitening your teeth to make sure you are using any teeth whitening products safely.
If you experience any pain, discomfort or sensitivity anywhere in your mouth after a teeth whitening treatment, let your dentist know as soon as possible. Even if it's not related to teeth whitening, they will be able to help.
Personalized Take-Home Teeth Whitening
You can also achieve a whiter and brighter smile at home by following our at-home whitening process. If you choose our take-home whitening option, your dentist will make impressions of your mouth and create custom whitening trays to fit your teeth.
While at home, you will fill the trays with the whitening solution and wear them according to your dentist's instructions. At the end of a successful treatment period, your teeth will be visibly whiter.
